The Kansas City Chiefs are bolstering their wide receiver depth by adding former Pittsburgh Steeler Jacob Copeland to their practice squad.
The move was announced by the team on Wednesday, offering a potential solution to their ongoing struggles at the position.
Copeland, a 5-foot-11, 201-pound Maryland alumnus, caught the eye of the Steelers during the pre-draft process with his athleticism and speed.
He impressed at the East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFL Combine, where he clocked a blistering 4.42-second 40-yard dash and leaped a 10-foot-7 broad jump. However, his below-average agility score (4.47-second short shuttle) may have contributed to his undrafted status.
Despite going undrafted, Copeland received opportunities with the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings but was released by both teams before the start of the regular season. He had a brief stint with the Steelers themselves in December 2023 but was eventually waived.
Now, Copeland lands in Kansas City, where he’ll have a chance to compete for a roster spot behind established stars like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman.
The Chiefs’ wide receiver group has underperformed this season, so Copeland’s explosiveness and speed could be a welcome addition.
