Jauan Jennings’ Future with the 49ers in Doubt.
Jauan Jennings’ tenure with the San Francisco 49ers may be coming to an end. As a restricted free agent, Jennings has yet to sign the second-round tender offered by the 49ers and notably skipped the first week of OTAs, signaling his desire for a multi-year contract extension similar to what Brandon Aiyuk is seeking. Jennings’ impressive Super Bowl performance might make him feel deserving of priority treatment over Aiyuk.
An extension for Jennings could be cost-effective since he is a slot receiver and not a starter, having caught only 19 passes last season. This would make retaining him beyond this season feasible for the 49ers.
However, the team recently used their first-round pick on Ricky Pearsall, another slot receiver, indicating they may be preparing to replace Jennings rather than extend his contract. Historically, the 49ers do not invest heavily in their number three receivers, allocating significant funds to fullback Kyle Juszczyk instead. This approach led to Kendrick Bourne’s departure in free agency a few years ago, a fate likely awaiting Jennings next year.
The 49ers could opt to trade Jennings before the season begins, potentially acquiring a player at a different position or a valuable draft pick. If Jennings leaves in free agency next year, the 49ers might receive a compensatory pick, though it may not be substantial.
Thus, fans should not be surprised if the 49ers trade Jennings soon.
