Louisville Animal Shelters Experiencing Major Crisis After Recent Storms, Here’s How You Can Help!
Louisville animal shelters are facing a critical situation following severe weather. Recent storms have left rural communities in Kentucky with significant wind and rain damage over Memorial Day weekend. Many residents are without power, and some have suffered severe damage to their homes, resulting in a surge of cats and dogs being placed in shelters. These shelters now urgently need assistance from residents who have been considering adoption.
The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is striving to accommodate as many animals as possible, but their kennels are at full capacity, preventing them from accepting new animals. If you’ve been thinking about adopting or fostering a kitten, cat, puppy, or dog, now is the time to act to help create space for more animals in need.
KHS provides compassionate care for animals and support for people affected by the severe weather. Visit any KHS adoption location to find your new pet. Note that the East Campus location is temporarily closed as of Wednesday, May 29, to house animals impacted by the storms, but all other locations remain open.
Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is also calling for help, urging owners to reclaim their pets to make room for others needing shelter. Due to the urgent situation, LMAS is waiving reclamation fees for owned animals, and adoption fees for dogs over 40 pounds are also waived. You can find all found dogs at the LMAS shelter listed here, and dogs available for foster, foster-to-adopt, or same-day adoption are listed here.
Your support can make a significant difference in this time of crisis.
