Rob Pelinka Hints Young Laker Won’t Be Traded Anytime Soon.
The Los Angeles Lakers commenced their 2024-25 season by introducing JJ Redick as their new head coach on Monday. At the introductory press conference alongside general manager Rob Pelinka, Redick shared his initial thoughts in his new leadership role. As the NBA Draft and free agency loom, a hectic week lies ahead for Redick and the revamped front office.
Pelinka shed light on the team’s offseason strategy, which might have surprised many Lakers fans anticipating major roster upgrades around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Contrary to expectations, Pelinka emphasized the importance of the Lakers’ young core, mentioning players like Jalen Hood-Schifino.
Hood-Schifino, drafted 17th overall in 2023, had a modest rookie season with limited opportunities under coach Darvin Ham, despite the team’s need for guard depth and shot creation. Initially speculated to be a trade asset this offseason to bolster the Lakers’ roster, the 21-year-old guard’s future seemed uncertain amid concerns about his value decreasing.
However, it now appears Hood-Schifino is slated to remain with the team for the foreseeable future. If D’Angelo Russell departs in free agency, Hood-Schifino could find himself in a more prominent role, though his readiness for such a challenge remains to be seen, posing a significant risk for the Lakers.
The decision to retain Hood-Schifino suggests the Lakers may not be as active in trade discussions as anticipated, potentially disappointing fans hoping for substantial moves in the coming weeks.
