Veteran Point Guard Named Phoenix Suns Dream Free Agent Target.
In a recent report by Viral Sports News, Kenneth Teape highlighted the Phoenix Suns’ significant underperformance during the 2023-24 season. Despite acquiring Bradley Beal to form a formidable trio with Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, the Suns failed to meet expectations, finishing sixth in the Western Conference and narrowly avoiding the NBA Play-In Tournament.
Their disappointing season culminated in a first-round sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves, which led to the dismissal of head coach Frank Vogel after just one year. Mike Budenholzer, a former NBA Champion with the Milwaukee Bucks, has taken over the coaching reins, hoping to replicate his past success.
To turn their fortunes around, the Suns need to address roster issues, particularly their depth and the absence of a true point guard. Vogel had advocated for the addition of a point guard to bring balance, but team owner Mat Ishbia believed it would be counterproductive, and no such move was made.
Given the past season’s struggles, the Suns are now expected to pursue a lead ball handler who can ease the offensive burden on Booker, Beal, and Durant. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report suggests that veteran point guard Kyle Lowry would be an ideal free-agent acquisition. Swartz believes Lowry could provide stability and veteran leadership, playing 20-25 minutes off the bench.
The Suns’ star trio didn’t perform up to their potential, partly due to the lack of a point guard, which impacted their offensive efficiency, ranking only 10th in offensive rating. While Ishbia emphasizes the importance of keeping the ball with Booker, Beal, and Durant, adding a seasoned point guard like Lowry could significantly improve their overall play and alleviate pressure on their primary scorers.
