Broncos Face Pivotal Decision on Reinstating Suspended Defensive Lineman.
The Denver Broncos have made significant improvements to their defensive line during the 2024 offseason, but another enhancement could be on the horizon. Broncos rookies are set to report for training camp on July 17, with veterans following on July 23. Former fourth-round pick Eyioma Uwazurike is eligible to apply for reinstatement on July 24. However, his situation is complicated by an ongoing criminal investigation. According to 9News Broncos insider Mike Klis, the NFL will delay Uwazurike’s reinstatement decision until this probe is resolved.
Typically, the NFL reinstates players on the same day they apply, but Uwazurike’s case is unique. He was suspended for a year after placing 32 bets on five Broncos games, including one in which he played. This infraction has led to an indefinite suspension, with reinstatement to be considered no earlier than July 24, 2024.
If cleared, the Broncos must decide whether to activate Uwazurike. Sources suggest the team hasn’t ruled out his return. Head coach Sean Payton expressed frustration over Uwazurike’s suspension last year, criticizing the NFL’s policy of sending suspended players away for a year without organizational support. Payton argued that suspending players without helping them address their issues is counterproductive.
Uwazurike has shown commitment to reform, attending weekly gambler’s anonymous meetings and therapy sessions. This proactive approach might influence the Broncos’ decision to keep him on the 90-man roster. General manager George Paton hinted at this possibility in April, mentioning Uwazurike while discussing the team’s defensive line depth.
Uwazurike was a fourth-round pick from Iowa State in the 2022 NFL Draft and was considered a steal for the Broncos. Although he played sparingly as a rookie, he was expected to potentially start at defensive end before his suspension.
Given Uwazurike’s potential and the team’s current depth, the Broncos are likely to give him another chance. Cutting him would have been an option if they had no intention of bringing him back. Therefore, it makes sense for the Broncos to see what Uwazurike can still contribute on the field.
