After Daniel Jones was benched, the Giants signed quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad….

After the New York Giants made the decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones in the midst of a turbulent 2024 season, they acted quickly to secure depth at the quarterback position. In a move that turned heads around the NFL, the Giants signed veteran quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad. Boyle’s addition marks a significant shift for the Giants, as they seek to stabilize their quarterback situation and provide some competition for the current roster.

### The Decision to Bench Daniel Jones

Daniel Jones, once seen as the potential franchise quarterback for the Giants, has struggled to live up to expectations in 2024. While the team as a whole has faced significant challenges, including injuries and inconsistent play across the offensive line, Jones’ performance has been under intense scrutiny. He has failed to replicate the flashes of promise seen in previous seasons, leading to a series of turnovers, inaccurate throws, and a lack of offensive cohesion. After several poor performances, the Giants coaching staff, led by head coach Brian Daboll, made the tough decision to bench Jones.

Jones’ benching was a major topic of discussion in New York, as it represented a potential turning point in the organization’s future plans. The Giants, who had recently committed a large contract extension to Jones, now faced questions about whether they had invested too much in a quarterback who had not yet proven he could consistently lead the team to success. For the moment, the Giants opted for a change, but the move also indicated that Jones’ long-term future with the team was uncertain.

### Enter Tim Boyle

In the wake of Jones’ benching, the Giants moved swiftly to add depth to their quarterback room. Tim Boyle, a journeyman quarterback with a limited track record in the NFL, was signed to the practice squad. Boyle’s arrival in New York is somewhat unexpected given his career trajectory. Having spent time with several NFL teams—including the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets—Boyle is not a household name, and his career has largely been as a backup or practice squad player.

However, Boyle brings several qualities that make him an appealing addition to the Giants’ roster. Firstly, Boyle is a seasoned veteran who has had exposure to multiple offensive systems, which gives him the ability to adapt to new schemes and potentially step in if needed. While Boyle has made only a handful of starts in his NFL career, he has experience in training camps, practices, and game situations that may serve him well if called upon.

### Boyle’s Career and Skillset

Tim Boyle’s NFL journey has been far from conventional. After going undrafted out of Eastern Kentucky in 2018, Boyle signed with the Green Bay Packers and spent his first few seasons learning behind quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley. During his time in Green Bay, Boyle gained a solid understanding of the NFL game, and his performance in the preseason caught the attention of other teams.

Boyle’s first significant playing time came during his stint with the Detroit Lions in 2021. In his limited appearances, Boyle struggled to make an impact, throwing for just 525 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions in six games. His time with the Lions showcased some of his strengths—he has a strong arm and decent mobility—but also highlighted his issues with consistency and accuracy. Boyle’s 2022 season was spent mostly as a backup with the New York Jets, and in 2023, he was once again on the fringes of the NFL, mostly working as a camp arm and practice squad player.

While Boyle may not be a solution to the Giants’ long-term quarterback woes, he does bring a level of experience and familiarity with the pressures of being a backup quarterback in the NFL. In a situation where the Giants could need a reliable, experienced quarterback to step in at a moment’s notice, Boyle provides insurance for the team without taking up a major roster spot.

### What Boyle Brings to the Giants

Tim Boyle’s addition to the Giants’ practice squad is largely about depth and preparation. While he may not be a legitimate threat to start over current quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor or Daniel Jones in the near future, Boyle gives the team another body to work with in practice. Given the Giants’ struggles with injuries and inconsistent play under center, Boyle could also be a valuable asset in terms of helping to prepare the team for a variety of game situations.

Boyle’s strong arm and ability to push the ball downfield could help the Giants stretch the field in practice scenarios, allowing the coaching staff to test different approaches to offensive playcalling. His background with different systems could also bring a fresh perspective to the quarterback room, especially if the Giants choose to pivot their offensive philosophy in the latter half of the season.

Moreover, Boyle’s presence on the practice squad might also signal that the Giants are taking a more methodical approach to their quarterback situation, rather than rushing to make a drastic change. With the future of Daniel Jones up in the air and Tyrod Taylor more of a stopgap option, Boyle provides some much-needed depth as the team evaluates their long-term plans.

### Looking Ahead

As the 2024 season progresses, the Giants will have to make some critical decisions regarding their quarterback position. Daniel Jones’ performance will likely determine whether he remains the starter for the remainder of the season or if the team explores other options in the offseason. Tim Boyle, while unlikely to be the answer to the team’s quarterback problems, gives the Giants a contingency plan and adds a layer of experience to a group that has been in flux.

The signing of Boyle is a reflection of the Giants’ awareness of their quarterback situation and their need to ensure depth at the position. While it remains to be seen how Boyle’s presence will impact the team, it underscores the Giants’ intent to remain competitive while navigating the uncertainty at quarterback.
