Jim Goodwin Uses Zoom for Dundee United Recruitment
Jim Goodwin, manager of Dundee United, is adopting a proactive approach to summer recruitment at Tannadice, revealing his strategy of connecting with potential signings through personalized Zoom calls.
Following their promotion to the Premiership, Dundee United is undergoing a significant squad rebuild under Goodwin’s leadership. The manager has already secured the signings of Dave Richards, Will Ferry, Vicko Sevelj, Ryan Strain, and Kristijan Trapanovski, alongside goalkeeper Jack Walton returning on loan.
Speaking about his recruitment tactics, Goodwin emphasized the importance of building rapport with players early on, especially given the competitive landscape of the Premiership. He highlighted how Zoom calls have facilitated meaningful discussions, allowing both parties to understand each other better and align on club ambitions.
“For me, it’s crucial to establish a connection with the player beyond what agents handle. Zoom has been invaluable in that regard,” Goodwin explained. “It’s not just about taking chances; we do thorough homework, gather references, and conduct scouting to ensure the right fit.”
Reflecting on the advantages of Premiership status in attracting talent, Goodwin acknowledged the club’s enhanced appeal but stressed the importance of diligent recruitment regardless of league status. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, crediting his collaboration with head of recruitment Michael Cairney for assembling a squad that meets the club’s criteria while managing financial constraints.
“With fifteen players departing, rebuilding the squad could have been daunting, but I thrive on these challenges,” Goodwin shared. “Having experienced similar scenarios at St Mirren, I feel we’re ahead of schedule this time.”
As Dundee United prepares for the upcoming season, Goodwin remains focused on refining the squad further and ensuring they are competitive in the Premiership, emphasizing quality over quantity in their recruitment strategy.
