The Padres benefit greatly from the most recent news on Roki Sasaki’s “handshake” Dodgers pact.
The American media is criticised by Roki Sasaki’s agent for swiftly introducing his client to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Although it won’t happen until January, Roki Sasaki will sign with an MLB team this winter. Following a protracted battle with the player’s agent, Sasaki’s NPB team, the Chiba Lotte Marines, declared they will post the 23-year-old right-hander. Sasaki can’t sign a big, long-term contract like Yoshinobu Yamamoto did last winter because he’s only 23. Because he is so young, his contract has significantly more restrictions under MLB regulations.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were immediately considered the favourite to recruit Sasaki because of their ties to Japan and their expanding Japanese fan base with the signing of Shohei Ohtani and Yamamoto. Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Sasaki were all members of the team that won the Japanese World Baseball Classic.
Dodgers face allegations of handshake agreement with Roki Sasaki
Front office personnel have reportedly questioned behind closed doors whether Sasaki has already accepted a deal with the Dodgers, even if it is only a handshake, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Joel Wolfe, Sasaki’s agent, has refuted these claims.
“In reality, this is just poor sportsmanship,” Wolfe told The Athletic, adding that “a group of executives who should know me better and do a lot of business with me insult my integrity by insinuating that I would be a part of some sort of nefarious agreement.”
According to Rosenthal’s story, the Dodgers declined to comment. They will be considered for Sasaki despite rival teams’ worries, partly because they have the most money left over from the international bonus pool. In their interest, Los Angeles won’t be the only one.
San Diego Padres could gain an edge in Roki Sasaki chase
Sasaki’s friendship with Yu Darvish, who has served as a mentor to the young pitcher, has made the San Diego Padres another possible contender. According to reports, Darvish is upset that other Japanese pitchers have picked the Dodgers over San Diego and hopes Sasaki won’t do the same.
According to the accusations made against the Dodgers and Wolfe’s remarks, San Diego may actually have a chance to acquire Sasaki. It’s far from what was first believed to be a closed case.
