Player grades: Helluva way to lose, as Edmonton Oilers fall 4-3 to Toronto Maple Leafs
Tough loss for the Edmonton Oilers, tying the game with two minutes left on a great Leon Draisaitl shot only to have it called back on an offside call. Such is the NHL in 2025.
Even still Edmonton almost tied it with one second left in the game but Toronto goalie Joseph Wahl came up with a stupendous save, preserving Toronto’s 4-3 win.
The Grade A shots were 19 for the Oilers, 13 for the Maple Leafs, with the subset of most dangerous 5-alarm shots four for Edmonton, six for Toronto.
Connor McDavid, 7. No points, but not for lack of trying. He came out flying but without great results in the first. Finally swooped in for a dangerous slot shot late in the first. Fired nine shots on net in total. Charged in hard on a second period power play and ripped a ripper on net, but no goal. Won a board battle to set up Drai for a Grade A late in the second. He almost tied it late with a furious rush up ice and charge at net. He won another board battle at the end of the game, kicking off the sequence where Perry almost tied it. Contributions/mistakes on Grade A shots (GAS): Even Strength +5/-1; Special Teams 3/0
Leon Draisaitl, 8. He threw an excellent reverse hit on Benoit in the first. Not much to cheer about that period, but it was something. Got off his Executioner’s Shot in the second but then whiffed on a second attempt, which is kind of how this game went for the Oilers early on. Pounded a couple hard shots on net late in the second. He won a key battle with his world-leading puck protection on Perry’s goal. Finally connected on his Executioner’s Shot with two minutes left to tie the game, but Klingberg was offside. Tough way to lose a game. Very tough. GAS: ES +8/-0; ST 1/0
Corey Perry, 7. Solid in this one. He ripped a hard shot early in the first. He made a Perry-esque play wiping out Pacioretty at the blueline on a pick, then slithered an outside shot through a mutli-moving screen to make it 4-3 in the third. He jumped on Bouchard’s blocked shot and almost slammed it in with one second left. GAS: ES +3/-0; ST 0/0
Zach Hyman, 6. He turned and fired for a PP Grade A in the first. Slammed an even more dangerous one on net in the second, but again no goal. He was one of three Oilers deked out on Toronto’s fourth goal. He moved in hard and fast to make it 4-2 on the rush in the second. GAS: ES +3/-2; ST 3/0
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 7. Good game. Knocked down a clearing shot at centre ice and steamed in a first period short-handed breakaway but no goal. Made a solid pass and made an even better flying screen on Hyman’s third period goal. GAS: ES +1/-0; ST 3/0
Viktor Arvidsson, 5. He’s slumping a bit just now. Came on in the second period in this one, getting a good shot on net. GAS: ES +1/-1; ST 0/0
Vasili Podkolzin, 6. He put a slot shot on net in the second for a Grade A, then got off another in the third. GAS: ES +2/-0; ST 0/0
Adam Henrique, 4. Too quiet. GAS: ES +0/-1; ST 0/0
Connor Brown, 5. He lost the net front battle on the scramble leading to Toronto’s third goal. Pounced on a turnover and set up Podzilla for a Grade A in the second. GAS: ES +1/-0; ST 0/1
Mattias Janmark, 5. Hustled hard, won some battles. But he allowed the outside shot on Toronto’s third goal. Set up Skinner for a near goal in the second. GAS: ES +1/-0; ST 0/1
Jeff Skinner, 6. Drew a smart penalty in the second. Broke in fast in the second, thwarted on wrap play but took a pass from Janmark and almost scored. GAS: ES +1/-0; ST 0/0
Kasperi Kapanen, 5. He made a couple of turnovers in the general melt down preceding Toronto’s first goal. Made the break-out pass leading to Skinner’s 5-alarmer, then was part of the Virtuous Cycle on Bouch’s second period bomb of a goal. GAS: ES +2/-3; ST 0/0
